UNC's American Chemical Society Student Affiliate is a club for students to get involved with chemistry in the community. There are various activities held throughout the year to enrich chemistry student's university experience. Key activities include:
Fall Picnic: To kick-off the school year, a fall get-together is planned. It gives everyone a chance to socialize and get to know new faces. There is food, games, and lots of fun!
Regional ACS Conference: In the past, our officers had the opportunity to attend the national conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Officers gave a presentation and learned about other ACS Student Affiliate clubs in the nation.
National Chemistry Week: Last year, National Chemistry week was held on the fourth week of October. Officers plan activities throughout the week.
Mole Day: Mole day begins at 6:23 am on October 23rd. To encourage the understanding of Avogadro's number, a guessing contest is held. Everyone is encouraged to guess how many moles of candy there are in a jar. The winner gets to keep the candy.
Demonstrations: ACS Student Affiliate plans and organizes chemistry demonstrations for local high schools. Usually, demonstrations are held throughout the year and are provided to schools at the request of teachers.
Study Breaks: Everyone could use a study break, right? During final's week, ACS Student Affiliate sponsors a study break. It gives students and faculty a chance to relax and enjoy some snacks. The study break is held on the day with the most chemistry finals.
Spring Banquet: What better way to end the hard-working school year by a banquet? The banquet includes dinner, an awards ceremony for various chemistry students, guest speakers, an overview of the ACS Student Affiliate Program, and some entertainment.
Career Building: ACS sponsors several career-building workshops. In the past, speakers from Kelley Scientific talked about interview skills, resume building, and important chemistry skills to master. This year, we plan to visit industries to help see what jobs are like for chemists in industry.
Meetings: This fall, the meetings are held on Tuesdays at 11:00 am to 12:00 pm in the ACS office room (3576). There are also night meetings held at 6:00 pm during the last Tuesday of every month. The night meetings are held at the Universtiy center (Pizza will be provided at these meetings).
