Freshman (De)Composition:
The Results of Grammar's Slow Death in the College Classroom

Just before the spring of 2000, I made what has
turned out to be a critical and highly educational choice. I decided
to attend graduate school after a fourteen-year hiatus away from
higher education. Getting a Master's in English seemed to be a wise
choice, and as I looked at my old transcripts, it became fairly
obvious where I should plant my seeds in this broad and even highly-controversial
field called "Language Arts"--writing instruction. As
I began to hurriedly submit my paperwork to the University of Northern
Colorado's Graduate School, one thing became clear to me: I could
teach writing, and in the process I would likely satisfy the basic
human need to apply oneself to an enjoyable job with enthusiasm. full

On
the Presentation of Chinese Nationalism in Chen Kaige's 'Yellow
Earth'
Kigan Chang
'Yellow Earth' is a pivotal film in
China artistically, from the point of view of the competing notions
of film practice, and explicitly for its place within the continuing
debate about the role of film in China. Both Chen Kaige, the director,
and his cinematographer, Zhang Yimou, are members of the "Fifth
Generation" of Chinese film makers, the first group of students
to graduate from the first class of the Beijing Film Academy, china's
only film academy, which had been closed during the Great Cultural
Revolution. Both artists had personally experienced the social dislocations
inflicted by the policies of the "revolution," having had their
formal education curtailed during their teens and suffered exile
to distant rural areas to labor alongside the peasants. full

Three distinct polarizations of management and
leadership research were found to fit into the following categories:
descriptive, proscriptive and, prescriptive.
The descriptive ideology includes aspects pertaining
to the qualitative nature of a discipline. The proscriptive ideology
is exclusive or restrictive in nature. The prescriptive ideology
adds situational factors to the application of theory.
An argument is made for restructuring management
and leadership thought. In other words, organizational behaviors
are adapted to the desired outcomes, based on individual organizational
norms and mores. It is in this capacity that each individual organization
will "fit" their management and leadership needs to their desired
outcomes. full
