Karen earned a B.A. in Journalism and English from Sam Houston State University in 1986, and in addition to her free lance editorial work, she has published poetry, fiction, and essays. She is currently studying for her M.A at the Greeley campus of the University of Northern Colorado.

I am a second year Master's student in the Rossier School of Education studying Postsecondary Administration and Student Affairs. I earned by Bachelor's degree in English and Women's Studies from the University of Michigan where I was actively involved as a teacher and researcher. After a two-year tenure at the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica I joined the Transfer and Retention of Urban Community College Students (TRUCCS) and the Kamehameha projects as a Research Assistant. In addition to my responsibilities as on the TRUCCS and Kamehameha projects, I am actively involved in several graduate student organizations. In my free time, I like to hike, read, and play video games.

I am a second year graduate student studying English Language and Literature. I earned my Associate of Arts Degree from Muskegon Community College. While earning my AA degree, I served as a freelance writer for The Muskegon Chronicle, The Detroit News, and The Detroit Free Press. I completed my undergraduate work in English with a minor in History from the University of Northern Colorado. I am a graduate teaching assistant and an active member of Sigma Tau Delta, Phi Alpha Theta, and Gold Key International Honor Society. I am currently working on my graduate thesis in Victorian Literature on the novels of Charlotte Bront¥. In addition to my studies and journalistic endeavors, I have published literary research and criticism.


Faculty Advisor to AE Extra:  Dr. Ben Varner,   University of Northern Colorado, CO 

I am a Professor of English at the University of Northern Colorado. In addition to having the pleasure of advising the student editors of AE Extra, I enjoy teaching and researching Victorian Literature, Composition Theory, the Bronte Sisters, and Charles Dickens. I also serve as Chief Editor of Academic Exchange Quarterly.


Assistant Editor/AE-Extra Webmaster:  Arthur Kingsland,   University of Newcastle, Australia

I am a Senior Lecturer specialising in Electronic Communication and in Design in the Architecture program in the University of Newcastle, Australia. I am also the Discipline Leader for Architecture in the School of Architecture and Built Environment overseeing the resourcing, staffing and running of the undergraduate and post-graduate programme offered by the discipline. My research concentrates on approrpiate educational methods for the professions, and in particular, Integrated Problem Based Learning.

My major interests outside academia include active participation in orienteering and rogaining (6-24 versions of orienteering) and running two dance groups with my partner - Newcastle Irish Set Dancers specialising in teaching and demonstrating Irish Set Dancing, and the Hunter Folk Dancers teaching and demonstrating an eclectic mix of Australian Colonial (and modern), Scottish Country, English Country and American contra dances.
