"Grist for the Mill":

Thoughts and Questions for You, Our Readers

On this page, we hope to stir your thinking about issues and ideas as they intersect with the theoretical and the tangible: in short, to make education more practical and relevant for everyone. We invite responses to these topics (and many others) in the form of papers, essays, well-grounded opinion pieces, fiction, and poetry. All college and university students and instructors, K-12 teachers, and education administrators are encouraged to reply. (Please see our CFP at: http://asstudents.unco.edu/students/AE-Extra/Call.htm before submitting.) Send submissions as Word attachments to the e-mail address below, and please include a brief bio that includes full contact information.

Restoring the Practical and the Relevant in Education:

  • Education has a reputation (good or bad) for being its own world. Phrases like "stuck in an ivory tower" and "Welcome to the 'real world'!" are common. When and how has education proved to be the most relevant or irrelevant to you? What were the rewards or the costs?
  • Student perceptions of "higher education" before and after enrollment--What are we doing right, and what could be done better?
  • Are academic journals and magazines relevant only to those in education? Should this be changed? If so, how? Are you aware of specific examples already in print or online?
  • How do we make individual subjects more relevant?

E-mail responses to Karen Heise, Editor-in-Chief, at: kheise2000@yahoo.com
Please be sure the words AEE SUBMISSION appear somewhere in the subject line.

Academic Exchange Extra invites reader responses to any writings in this issue--especially articles advancing the scholarly debate of issues raised.
