"Grist for the Mill":

Thoughts and Questions for You, Our Readers

On War and Risk

On this page, we hope to stir your thinking about issues and ideas as they intersect with the theoretical and the tangible: in short, to make education more practical and relevant for everyone. We invite responses to these topics (and many others) in the form of papers, essays, well-grounded opinion pieces, fiction, and poetry. All college and university students and instructors, K-12 teachers, and education administrators are encouraged to reply. Any topic (even those from past issues) may be used at any time. Please see our CFP at: http://asstudents.unco.edu/students/AE-Extra/Call.htm before submitting. Send submissions as Word attachments to the e-mail address below, and please include a brief bio that includes full contact information.

EDUCATION AND WAR: UNEASY BEDFELLOWS?

  • What should education's primary role be: to promote or prevent war?
  • When does education turn to propaganda?
  • What are some historical examples of propaganda masked as education, and its results?
  • Regarding the current crisis with Iraq, who is using the most propaganda, and why? What can be done to counteract it?
  • Famous war speeches, rhetoric, or commentary throughout history
  • Is there such a thing as a 'noble war'?

RISK: WHERE SHOULD WE DRAW THE LINE, OR SHOULD WE?

  • Why do people take risks--especially highly dangerous ones like manned space flight?
  • Should the Space Station be abandoned?
  • Should the shuttle program continue?
  • What about the future of manned space flight? Has it ever paid for its keep--both fiscally and in terms of education?
  • Do we have the capacity as humans to keep space exploration peaceful?
  • Why do spectacular tragedies like the Columbia disaster affect us so deeply when death--often on a much larger scale--is a global daily occurrence?
