Thoughts and Questions for You, Our Readers

Writing's Changing Role in Education

On this page, we hope to stir your thinking about issues and ideas as they intersect with the theoretical and the tangible: in short, to make education more practical and relevant for everyone. We invite responses to these topics (and many others) in the form of papers, essays, well-grounded opinion pieces, fiction, and poetry. All college and university students and instructors, K-12 teachers, and education administrators are encouraged to reply. (Please see our CFP at: http://asstudents.unco.edu/students/AE-Extra/Call.htm before submitting. Send submissions as Word attachments to the e-mail address below, and please include a brief bio that includes full contact information.

Education and the English Language:

  • Should students who cannot speak English be eligible to enroll in the U.S. public school system? What should be done for them? Who should pay for it, and how?
  • Why has English become the dominant language the world over? Or has it? Is this perception made from arrogance?
  • Should American children be taught a second language? Which one? When should that training start?
  • Is American culture placing itself at disadvantage by not cultivating a second language? Is this an exclusionary process, and if so, what do we lose because of it?

Writing's Changing Role in Education:

  • Has writing's role changed in the minds of students since the advent of e-mail? Is e-mail damaging or encouraging our students' writing abilities?
  • What constitutes "good" writing?
  • Does writing need to be restored to an important place in a set of skills students take with them when they graduate? If so, how can that best be done?
  • What has writing taught your students? What have your students' writings taught you?
