Foils Among the Spoils

To deny us,
we took the righteous path.
To condemn us,
we stood against the spear.
To refuse us,
we met the people’s heart.

Arrows do not defeat us.          Words do not inflame us.
                      Stars do not contain us.

Angels were dark
because the light
of ignorance
became
a weapon.

Too much power
we overcame;
To unmask truth
we brought to flame
the questions kindling
from within you.

We saw the world
in darkness,
men of power
calling after us

deceivers         traitors            instigators
                        terrorists

We couldn’t see our faces;
the night forbade us.
But over time,
our wings became
a public pathway.

Where we were darkly
everyone else began
to find themselves again:
fuel made them manifest
among rich gods
of fabrication:
foils among the spoils.
