november 1

at the mall, a man
in an electric wheelchair
looks tired

 

november 2

a lone bat
flutters between trees--
a jet climbs

 

november 3

the nervous lady
studying the newspaper
has lots of make up

 

november 4

a girl has safety
pins--the kind you use for
diapers--in her ears

 

november 5

a pretty girl
with a belly button ring--
she looks afraid

 

november 6

a dead bird,
alongside the highway--
feet up

 

november 7

the soldier,
dead in his foxhole, still
clutching his rifle

 

november 8

charred trees along
the highway advertise
the fire’s demise

 

november 9

moonlight in the lake--
white pools appear, and then
go away

 

november 10

a v-flock of cranes
against the white slopes of
mount hermon

 

november 11

heavy fog
on the grey lake--
we hold hands

 

november 12

in hope, bc,
there's an upside-down
restaurant sign

 

november 13

a cow on the hill,
just above the mist,
eats alone

 

november 14

on the bus,
the blonde fixes her hair for
the fourteenth time

 

november 15

on the bus,
a man ignores his laptop
to answer his cell

 

november 16

"Highway Rescue"
reads the sign on the
rusty truck

 

november 17

the symphony ends,
the endless applause--rain,
rain everywhere

 

november 18

i see an iceberg
glinting in glacier bay--
winter in a pond

 

november 19

bees dead
in ice--what warmth
fooled them?

 

november 20

through frosty glass:
bushes blurred and black,
rattling in the wind

 

november 21

first snowfall:
children’s muffled
voices

 

november 22

snow dust
snakes along asphalt--
then it’s gone

 

november 23

thirty-four years ago
i sat on a hillside with my dad--
a deer jumps a fence

 

november 24

in darkness,
two rifle shots--
a bear howls

 

november 25

northern lights
open and close doors
of green

 

november 26

-38:
a full moon lights up
day-old snow

 

november 27

chunks of river-ice
float by the wooden bridge--
faces of winter

 

november 28

hoarfrost--
some spindles point straight up
at the cold sky

 

november 29

sunset:
black treetops against
a red sky

 

november 30

wind rattles windows--
somewhere a child pretends to
sleep in darkness
