chapter 11
november 1
at the mall, a man
in an electric wheelchair
looks tired
november 2
a lone bat
flutters between trees--
a jet climbs
november 3
the nervous lady
studying the newspaper
has lots of make up
november 4
a girl has safety
pins--the kind you use for
diapers--in her ears
november 5
a pretty girl
with a belly button ring--
she looks afraid
november 6
a dead bird,
alongside the highway--
feet up
november 7
the soldier,
dead in his foxhole, still
clutching his rifle
november 8
charred trees along
the highway advertise
the fire’s demise
november 9
moonlight in the lake--
white pools appear, and then
go away
november 10
a v-flock of cranes
against the white slopes of
mount hermon
november 11
heavy fog
on the grey lake--
we hold hands
november 12
in hope, bc,
there's an upside-down
restaurant sign
november 13
a cow on the hill,
just above the mist,
eats alone
november 14
on the bus,
the blonde fixes her hair for
the fourteenth time
november 15
on the bus,
a man ignores his laptop
to answer his cell
november 16
"Highway Rescue"
reads the sign on the
rusty truck
november 17
the symphony ends,
the endless applause--rain,
rain everywhere
november 18
i see an iceberg
glinting in glacier bay--
winter in a pond
november 19
bees dead
in ice--what warmth
fooled them?
november 20
through frosty glass:
bushes blurred and black,
rattling in the wind
november 21
first snowfall:
children’s muffled
voices
november 22
snow dust
snakes along asphalt--
then it’s gone
november 23
thirty-four years ago
i sat on a hillside with my dad--
a deer jumps a fence
november 24
in darkness,
two rifle shots--
a bear howls
november 25
northern lights
open and close doors
of green
november 26
-38:
a full moon lights up
day-old snow
november 27
chunks of river-ice
float by the wooden bridge--
faces of winter
november 28
hoarfrost--
some spindles point straight up
at the cold sky
november 29
sunset:
black treetops against
a red sky
november 30
wind rattles windows--
somewhere a child pretends to
sleep in darkness
