If We Could but Know

Even in the darkest night
The shadows linger
Adding nuances
From below
Lifting up the sorrows
Dragging out lines
To blanket out smiles

Yet in each of us
Our spirit makes
The darkness less
Numbing
Hardly constraining
Not nearly draining
And we suffer
Not from deprivation
But the hollowness
Of our own materiality

When we sink ourselves
Into the bottomless holes
Of our minds
If we could but know
Ourselves in the darkness
We’d see it’s only illusion;
We can choose to be strong.
